Winter Here, Will Spring be Far Away?
Indeed, winter has come here, so spring is on the way. It is floating ( hovering) above our heads, lingering around us, and flowing at our feet. Flowers of life could face up to frozen frost with pride thanks to China at the turn of China’s lunar year 2008.
A blanket of ice froze stiff the gentlest smiling faces, and drops of happy tears rolling on the flower flakes.
A blanket of ice and snow brought down state electric grid, thus resulting in an unprecedented power failure in South China.
During the unique season of returning home for the spring festival happy reunion, their hometowns are to migrant workers and college students what kites are to hands that fly them. Their dreams seemed hopeless , images of homes vague in their tearful eyes.
Countless cities like Chenzhou of Hunan province prayed silently in the darkness over a period of three weeks. A blanket of icy snow collapsing almost all the state electric grid in the region. Only then could people realize the true meaning of Hellen Keller’s strong desire to see for three days by the light of candle. They struggled to live through the disaster of shortage of supplies of water and electricity.
Have you ever heard of the tale of angel of snow? When snow flakes float down from heaven like feathers of duck, the beautiful angel of snow will fly freely downward, shivering her hidden wings, to heal the scars and wounds of the world. Fantastic as it sounds, it is the incarnation of our beloved parents.
Departing from Zhongnanhai
Our premier, WenJiabao flew directly among the worst disaster-hitting areas, listening to the briefing of the situation, directing the rescue work, and comforting the passengers trapped at the Guangzhou railway station.
Faced with crowded, tired-out passengers, our premier bowed to them meaningfully, expressing sincere apologies and warm greetings.
From that moment on, I believed that transportation would be restored to normal soon, for I caught a glimpse of belief in the eyes of our respectful premier, the premier for the people, that our sufferings are already on the top of agenda of our government work plan. Although our transportation artery --- Jingzhu express way has been blocked, but hearts of the whole nation are closely united just one fist.
We are gaining hope.
Upon the call of the government, soldiers are mobilized to fight the disaster, keeping order, removing the snow and ice on the expressway, and losing no time to help reconstruct the damaged electric facilities. Rescue materials and donations are converting to the south from all sides of the country. People will never forget the familiar and inpiring and touching scene in which President Hu, regardless of his old age, helped carry the electric poles up the hill and climbed down to the bottom of the mines to inspect and greet the miners, wishing them a happy new year while making great efforts to make contributions to the disaster relief
Cold winter could never stop the coming of the green colour, for it is deeply rooted in the fertile soil.
Green represents vigor and vitality. On the chilly and silent Jingzhu expressway, a flowing river of soldiers dressed in green uniforms are digging and removing the ice covering the road, while our generals sending boiled water and instant noodles to the trapped drivers, which typically embodies our army’s deep love for our people.
In Guizhou province, on a remote hill side, five beloved soldiers from a certain division stationed in Guizhou fell asleep leaning against each other after having repaired the damaged electric facilities non-stop for 120 hours. They are extremely tired and sleepy. In their dreams, they lighted the lights of tens of thousands of homes with their own hands. How hearted and noble the smiles on their faces are!
A soldier of my age, sitting before a cake of now on his 18th birthday, he wished that all the folks could enjoy the colourful festival night view while enjoying delicious dinners, and all the passengers on the way home could have a smooth and pleasant journey. Such is the voice from the bottom of our soldiers. People will never forget their amazed sacrifices for the relief work.
In the venue designed for the upcoming Guangzhou Fair, similarly fainted soldiers carried on the backs exhausted passengers to the temporary toilets, or clinics. Such faces are both strange and familiar.
Wherever you are, our backs are stamped with Chinese ancestors.
Donations from Hongkong SAR and Macao SAR reached the snow-hit areas unanimously, indeed touching. We derive from the same race and same root.
Letters from China’s embassies in Russia, France , Pakistan and so on further stabilize people’s belief in conquering the disaster.
The Chinese nation’s amazing fight against the disaster attracted the whole attention and concern of the world.
New York Times stated in an article that such a disastrous icy snow could possible have ruined any nation , with the Chinese nation an exception.
The UN International Disaster Relief Strategy advised all governments in the world to learn from China.
Winter has come, but flowers are still tender and fragrant, for flowers of life could look down upon ice and frost with pride. The rolling stews are just the voicing hearts of colourful flowers:
Why my eyes are always welling with tears? Just because I love the land emotionat ly.
