为了纪念国际电信联盟（ITU）的成立，1968年电联第二十三届行政理事会议决定，把国际电信联盟成立之日——5月17日定为“世界电信日”，并从 1969年开始确定每年主题，国际电信联盟（ITU）和会员国都要组织各种纪念和庆祝活动。每年世界电信日的主题由国际电信联盟（ITU）行政理事会于上一年决定，下面列出的就是自1969年以来历年世界电信日的主题。
